I have been an avid follower of Rebecca for a number of years now, so I was super excited to have the opportunity to catch up a few months ago. We both have very similar passions, and I am so excited to be sharing this interview with you!
Rebecca is a mum to two boys, Pregnancy Massage Specialist, Prenatal & Postnatal Yoga Teacher, Baby Massage Instructor and Childbirth Educator. She is the founder of Earthly Birth, and is passionate about enabling women to move into motherhood feeling fully prepared, both physically and emotionally (something I am equally passionate about!).
What started you on your women’s wellness journey?
When I first began my massage training over ten years ago, I knew I wanted to focus on women’s health. I moved further into this by specialising in Pregnancy and Postnatal care eight years ago and have studied, and delved deeper into how to support women through the craziness of pregnancy and early motherhood.
After falling pregnant with my first boy (now six) I realised how little we have on offer in Adelaide. The massages I had myself were far from “nice”, very uncomfortable and there was no concern or care shown towards my unborn baby. My body was falling apart and the therapists I saw had no idea what to do! Thus my focus to specialise became even more intense!
Could you tell us a bit more about your services, and how you help women on their journey through pregnancy, birth and motherhood?
Earthly Birth specialise in pregnancy massage and postnatal massage, with a more remedial focus. We aren’t light and fluffy (although can be if required!) but work more on some of the more structural changes that happen during pregnancy/early postpartum and work with each woman’s body individually-there are no set treatments/sequences.
I have also studied in depth over the last eight years, including Perinatal Acupressure, Advanced Pregnancy Massage/Shiatsu techniques and also I recently completed a Diploma in Childbirth Education (Dip CBEd – CBI) which I bring into all my pregnancy workshops and classes.
Baby Massage and Massage for Children Workshops are another passion of mine…and my children receive massage every day. Yes, every day! It is a valuable tool to have in my motherhood tool kit, let me tell you!
Do you feel that mindset and mental wellbeing are important during this period?
Definitely. With the raging hormones, we can change very quickly. From joyful to cranky and sore-within hours! Having some strategies to cope with tough days (or weeks) is really important. Massage, gentle exercise, a good old catch up with a friend who doesn’t mind you talking about your pregnancy are great ways to offload some of the tension you can feel as a busy woman in 2016.
What is the biggest health, motherhood and wellness myth that you are constantly shattering?
I have two! I hear many women tell me they didn’t know they could have a massage whilst pregnant, until their friend had one! I couldn’t think of anything more crazy than a health care professional telling a woman who is feeling sore and achy that she can’t have a massage. If women choose a reputable, qualified and experienced therapist then they can’t go wrong. Choose someone who just “offers” pregnancy massage and you may find that the experience is far from beautiful.
Another myth I hear is that women “can’t plan” for birth. They CAN PLAN FOR BIRTH! There is a loooonnnggg list of things I discuss with women and birth partners in my workshops which will enable them to arrive at their birth feeling confident about almost everything. There are lots of unknowns, sure, but it’s what tools you have to deal with the things that crop up – that’s what counts. If you aren’t prepared in some way, you will loose the ability to make an informed choice. If you don’t know about the choices, how can you choose?
What is one tip or insight you would like to share with pregnant women or mums with a new baby?
Take your sleep seriously! Very seriously!
Do you have a favourite quote or affirmation that you would like to share?
Trust your intuition. Trust your thoughts. Trust your body.
That’s by me!
